1965 Beatles contract says they won’t play for a segregated audience

In response to the idea of playing a U.S. show for only whites, John Lennon said in 1964, “We never play to segregated audiences and we aren’t going to start now. I’d sooner lose our appearance money.”

This 1965 contract shows that they meant it…

Whoa, partner. You went on a wild, angry tangent because of a numeric error, but the gist of Kyle’s point still stands. There’s only one person on this page that seems to “think they know everything”– and it’s not the person to whom you replied.

Not at all. I have no ability to measure whether people will get my sarcasm or not. I just say stuff and then it’s a crapshoot whether people think I’m way off base or not. Happens all the time.

adam,What does it really matter? It could have been a typo or simply misread. That doesn’t suggest ignorance, it’s merely a mistake. TKyle’s point is still valid.

    Pretty heavy-handed for an ALL-WHITE band…

Always good to see people stand up in a fight that isn’t necessarily theirs.

Where the hell did you get 7 limos from??? There are two (2) limos that seat 7 each. People need to slow down and read properly. This is why so many people are ignorant yet they think they know everything.

Sounds like he got smarter…assuming he made it away with some of them which have got to be priceless. Sneaky is pretty frequently smart 🙂

Remember – they were all under 25 at the time, and their manager not much older – I think their naivety was part of their charm, and not being with a “seasoned” promoter saved them in a lot of ways, but financially, they got screwed in the early years.

I love how the 7 Cadillac Limousines are preferred to be air-conditioned (“if possible”) haha. That sort of thing (possibility of no A/C) would be unthinkable today.

It is indeed. I felt cheesy expressing my true feelings, which were “Gee whiz god bless those beatles for standing up for what’s right even when it’s not totally cool yet.”

And just when you thought The Beatles couldn’t get any more amazing…

No, not new… my husband had plenty of rolls of film and cameras confiscated back in the day, i.e. the 70s and 80s. He never got smart, just sneakier and sneakier.

It’s cool to see that they took a stand and knew anti-segregation was a fight for all to be involved in. No naivete there. Love those blokes.

I noticed that in the contract it insists that anyone with an unauthorized recording device (video camera, audio recorder, stills camera) must turn it off before the show. Meaning fans who wanted photos of the beatles had to buy one, and no one would have live performance footage unless they paid. When my boyfriend was video recording for a band on stage, and the headliners crew asked him to turn off his camera, I thought it was like a NEW thing, lol.
