ESPN writer suffers Twitter meltdown after boxer gets suspended

Nearly a month ago we reported on boxer Juan Manuel Lopez blaming a referee for being knocked out by his opponent Orlando Salido. Since he had just been knocked out, most fight fans gave JuanMa a pass for his obviously emotional post-fight comments. The Puerto Rico athletic commission wasn’t anywhere near as kind.

From ESPN:

The commonwealth’s professional boxing commission has suspended the license of former WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez for one year for criticizing a referee after his March 10 loss to Mexico’s Orlando Salido.

He was also ordered Tuesday to pay a $10,000 fine and provide 100 hours of community service.

Lopez previously said a suspension would force him into early retirement. He has 20 days to appeal.

ESPN’s Dan Rafael obviously didn’t agreed with the suspension after suffering a bit of a meltdown from the news.

I happen to think the punishment to Juanma Lopez is absurdly harsh. WAY out of proportion to what he did. Very unfair punishment. #boxing

Juanma got a year for saying something stupid 5 minutes after being consussed, for which he has apologized multiple times? Terrible decision

Guys who legitimately endanger opponents by using steroids who get busted rarely get that long of a punishment.

Puerto Rico commission's decision on Juanma makes the Texas commission look like the gold standard. #boxing

Juanma's punishment is a joke. Zab Judah once threw a stool at a ref and put his hands on him and didn't get a year. #boxing

Margarito tried to wear loaded gloves & only sat 16 months. But Juanma gets year for saying something dumb after being concussed? HORRIBLE!

How in the world does the Puerto Rican commission have the authority to order Juanma to do community service? More absurdity.

It's not like Juanma glassed anyone!!! Yet he gets a year suspension from the Puerto Rican commission. FARCE! #boxing

Puerto Rican commission 1 year suspension of Juanma makes the wretched WBC look good!!!! #boxing #wbcisdisgusting

@OscarDeLaHoya He's not 1st fighter to say something dopey after a fight. And he apologized at least twice. Should be punished but a YEAR?

— Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) April 3, 2012

I spoke to a regulator about Juanma's suspension. Most likely, it would be honored throughout the US unless Juanma won an appeal to the ABC.
