The government shutdown has seen ordinary citizens stepping up to pick up the slack. Twitchy told you about the South Carolina man who decided to head to D.C. to mow the lawn in front of the Lincoln Memorial himself, and today the story of a generous waitress in Concord, N.H., is going viral. Meet Sarah Hoidahl. She is a waitress at the Ruby Tuesday in Concord. She is 21, and a single mother. Earlier this week, she waited on two uniformed soldiers who stopped by for lunch. When it came time for the check, this is what she presented to the soldiers.

Her employer, Ruby Tuesday, has recognized Hoidahl as well, passing along the message she wrote to the soldiers.

WMUR reports:

It was a typical Wednesday afternoon shift at the Ruby Tuesday restaurant in Concord when two service members came in for lunch and sat in Hoidahl’s section.

“They were looking through the menu and she had mentioned something about the furlough and how we aren’t getting paid and I was like, ‘Oh, jeez,’” Hoidahl said.

Hoidahl, who is a single mother of a 15-month-old boy, said she knows how difficult it can be to make ends meet. “I was just thinking to myself that must be really difficult,” she said. “Just because the income stops, doesn’t mean the bills do.”
